The two boxers that travelled to Barbados to participate in the Carlton Hope/Lionel Hall Memorial Boxing tournament, August 30 last, returned home after experiencing mixed fortunes. Light Heavyweight, Markember Pierre, scored a 3rd round TKO victory over Arkeem Isadore of the Barbados Defense Force when he forced the referee to halt his bout while Bantamweight pugilist, Travis Hubbard, lost on points (30-27), on all three of the judges’ scorecards, to Jabali Breedy of the Thunderbird Boxing Gym.
The 8 bout boxing card saw pugilists from several gyms in Barbados contesting among their counterparts. Pierre and Hubbard travelled to that country in response to the exchange arrangement recently brokered by the President of the Barbados Amateur Boxing Association, Anthony Jones, and his Guyana Boxing Association counterpart, Steve Ninvalle.
Cuban Coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldan accompanied the boxers in the capacity of Manager/Coach. He said that despite Hubbard’s loss, he (Roldan) is satisfied with the boxer’s performance. Señor Roldon said that tournaments of this nature would serve to improve the boxers’ record while providing worthwhile internationally flavoured activity for them.
