Entrepreneurial women of the St Cuthbert’s Mission craft centre and representatives of the ‘S-4 Foundation’ participated in a technology seminar over the weekend at STARR Computers Inc.’s head office at 59 Brickdam.
The seminar saw presentations by President of Starr Computers Inc., Michael Mohan; General Manager Raymond Majeed, Sales Manager Penny Francis and Executive Director of S-4 Foundation Imarah Radix.
Mohan related that technology defines the era and over the years numerous innovations—including ever-shrinking computers, mobile phones, and alternative energies—have been introduced in homes and workplaces, changing the way persons live, work, and do business.
He explained that the potential to advance women economically may be the most exciting transformative feature of technology.
“Empowering women and improving the efficiency of their work is critical for reducing poverty. Mounting evidence confirms that women’s improved economic status produces many positive economic and welfare outcomes for children, families, and societies. Thus, the initiative of STARR Computers to host the seminar that is one of many sessions the company has been a part of,” Mohan said.
Underscoring that technology is an engine for economic growth; he declared that the path to success is within the technological sphere.
General Manager Raymond Majeed opined that improving women’s access to technology has the potential to spur their economic advancement and stimulate broader economic growth. Regrettably, he said, technology has been underused in unlocking women’s economic opportunities. “The gender divide is evident in both traditional and modern technologies.”
Sales Manager Penny Francis discussed with the group the benefits of technology and using social media such as facebook and email to promote their craft and various products. She related that one of the major benefits of advertising on a social networking site is that advertisers can take advantage of the users’ demographic information and target their ads appropriately. As such, social media targeting makes it possible for users to see advertisements that might actually interest them.
S-4 Foundation’s Imarah Radix emphasized that her organization focuses on women’s education and development, and the seminar was vital for women to realize their place in an Information Technology-driven world.
“The women found the workshop very interesting and it opened their eyes to new opportunities when it comes to small businesses and using technology to advance their development. “Women need to know what it is they are capable of, since often they doubt themselves when it comes to using technology as there are more men than women in the ICT sector. We need to teach more women and empower them with the skills to use technology in their business and their daily lives.”
