Police have released the main suspect in the murder of waitress Deborah Blackman, who was shot dead in the Chinese Delicious Restaurant two Saturdays ago.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect was released yesterday, but this newspaper was unable to verify reports that he was placed on an identification parade. Police had detained the individual sometime last week, and sources said that he reportedly bore a strong resemblance to the man that a surveillance camera recorded shooting the 48-year-old waitress as she stood behind a counter.
Part of the security camera footage, obtained by Kaieteur News, showed the alleged shooter, who was wearing a black cap, with red peak, going up to the counter, which bars off the dining area.
Police who viewed the recording said that Blackman, of Critchlow Circle, Tucville, placed a box of food on the counter. The alleged gunman, who appeared to be accompanied by two other men, reportedly walked out of the restaurant, but returned to the counter and shot Blackman.
Police said that the men arrived and left on a CG motorcycle. According to investigators, there is no indication that the suspects attempted to rob the restaurant.
Crime Chief Leslie James has said that investigators were looking at several motives, but declined to say whether robbery had been ruled out.
Some of Blackman’s children, who viewed the recording of the attack, insist that they know of no reason why anyone would have wanted to kill their mother. One relative said that information they subsequently received indicated that their mother was the victim of a robbery, while another relative expressed concern that police had not arrested the other men whose faces were clearly visible in the surveillance camera recording.
The 48-year-old waitress had worked at the restaurant, located in D’urban Street, for some eleven years. She was laid to rest in Berbice last Saturday.
