A Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara woman has been charged with the murder of her 37-year-old friend whose lifeless body was found with a stab wound to the heart, at the back of her house on Sunday last.
Angela Khan appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court yesterday and was charged with murdering 37-year-old Bharrat Sugrim on Sunday at her South Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara home.
Khan was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Reports are that Khan and her reputed husband, Dhaniram Vijay Seewah were embroiled in a heated argument which eventually led to a fight sometime around 16:30 hours on Sunday. Sugrim, who had visited the couple’s home, attempted to intervene as a peacemaker when he was reportedly stabbed once to the region of the heart.
The incident reportedly occurred on the verandah of the couple’s home, and the wounded man went to use the outhouse where he eventually collapsed.
The Better Hope, ECD fisherman (Sugrim) was discovered by neighbours lying motionless on the muddy ground in the yard. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead.
The matter was reported and the couple was arrested after ranks had reportedly observed that both suspects had minor injuries and a knife believed to be the murder weapon was found in the yard.
Following advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Khan was charged for murdering Sugrim and wounding her husband.
During the hearing, she pleaded guilty to the wounding charge and was sentenced to six months imprisonment. She is expected to return to court on September 24.
