…An innovative and lucrative way of advertising
While the original purpose of social media is to create an avenue in which people around the globe can
connect, interact and share information, the business community has capitalized on the opportunities offered via these websites, particularly facebook, to market their products.
Marketing experts have noted that entrepreneurs who take advantage of online advertising save a significant amount of revenue.
Local entrepreneur and owner of the gourmet cupcake enterprise ‘Cupcravery,’ Rosco Jeffrey is one such person who has harnessed the opportunity of marketing online.
The mother of one and former pharmacy assistant, whose love for baking, particularly cupcakes, led her to the enterprise, noted that unlike most businesses, facebook is her main source of connecting with customers.
“I have a small business so I do personalised orders for people. I don’t have a bakery or outlet where persons can walk in and make their orders. My customers use facebook or Whatsapp to connect with me. My mobile numbers are on the page.”
Jeffrey says that most of her clients learnt about Cupcravery through a mutual friend on facebook. She noted that this method of advertising is not only free but it quick and easy.
“Well the word gets around pretty quickly and easily. Someone likes our page and our merchandise pops up in the newsfeed of a mutual friend, who likes it and that’s basically how my business grows.”
Jeffrey completed a baking course in Trinidad and Tobago but continues to use the web to learn more
about her trade. She noted that the best part of establishing a cupcake enterprise is employing the use of one’s ingenuity and creativity.
“I read a lot of the stuff online to get new ideas. I watch tutorials on YouTube, sometimes I have to improvise but my stuff always comes out great. There so many different flavours to make… I can do six or twelve packs of German chocolate cupcakes, Fudge cupcakes with strawberry crème cheese frosting, crunchy pecan filling cupcakes and a whole host of other for customers who pre-order.”
Ms. Jeffrey is hopeful that the enterprise will evolve into a gourmet cupcake outlet someday.
“My partner and I work together. I bake and he helps with the delivery because we offer free delivery to costumers around Georgetown. We officially started in March but the business is already on its way because of the response and support we received from our customers.”
The 28 year-old entrepreneur has since acquired clients in the United States and Canada. She fills approximately nine orders per week.
A number of other local businesses have also noted the benefits of advertising online.
Shelly Sattuar of Pink Memo Boutique, which is situated in the Courtyard Mall, Robb Street, Georgetown says that her customers actually find facebook advertisements quite beneficial.
“We actually pay models to wear our clothes and upload the photos on facebook. Based on the response we’ve received, we can safely say that our costumers actually prefer to see the clothes on actual people rather than a clothes rack before they purchase it.”
Although it is an unconventional method of advertising, Sattuar says that facebook is a great way to connect with thousands of potential customers. She says that the boutique supplies customers in various parts of the Caribbean region.
“We have acquired costumers from Barbados and other parts of the Caribbean through facebook. It is
our main source of connecting with customers and getting feedback. Our potential customers get a chance to see what we have to offer and we don’t have to go through the hassle of getting a fresh advertisement on the radio or television. Whenever, we have new arrivals or ongoing promotions we can easily update our page. It‘s probably the best way of showcasing the stylish clothing available at Pink Memo Boutique.”
Presilla Ward, manager of ‘Hair She Goes,’ a store which located at Camp Street, Georgetown said that her company started using facebook to market their products last November. She noted that the store which sells hair extensions and weaves has gained access to an increasing number of clients.
“People see our stuff and like it on facebook and it spreads. We have since gained clients from Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname.” (Rehanna Ramsay)
