A teenage girl who strolled into a city store last Saturday and stole over $4000 worth of goods, has
been fined $25,000 by the court for shoplifting.
Shivanie Gobin, 18, admitted to taking two tubes of lipstick, one lady speed stick deodorant, one bottle of conditioner, one bottle of shampoo and a jar of hair cream from Fazia’s Collections on America Street, Georgetown when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
After being held in custody for two days, the teenager, of Non-Pareil, East Coast Demerara appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge.
Gobin was arrested around 14:00 hours on Saturday after a staff of Fazia’s store, notified the security guard that the teenager had slipped the items into her bag. Gobin was then escorted to the cashiers’ counter and asked to empty her bag.
The items totaling $4,180 were reportedly found in her handbag and the matter was reported to the police. She was arrested and charged.
Yesterday, Gobin’s lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat claimed that his client, a junior accounts clerk at Silvie’s Variety Store, placed the items in her bag with the intention of paying. Police Prosecutor, Corporal Aduni Innis, however, said that her actions were a clear indication of her intention to shoplift from the store.
The Magistrate reiterated that the lawyer’s claim was no excuse for the teenager’s actions. Gobin was fined $25,000 and issued with a reminder that she could be sent to jail for up to a fortnight if she failed to pay.
