A man who was reportedly behind the wheel of a car that killed a renowned bodybuilder was released on $400,000 bail yesterday.
Dexter Phil, 24, of Wisroc Housing Scheme, Linden, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Phil, a plant operator of Bosai, is accused of driving in a manner dangerous to the public while piloting motor car PPP-2299 on Tuesday (August 12) at Friendship, East Bank Demerara, thereby causing the death of Delon Michael Harlequin, a resident of Grand Scheme, Craig, East Bank Demerara.
According to information received, Harlequin was heading north along the East Bank Demerara Public Road on his motor cycle, when Phil’s vehicle made a U-turn at the gas station in Friendship and struck him.
Reports are that Harlequin was flung into a trench opposite the gas station. The 32-year-old was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he later succumbed.
In court yesterday, Phil’s attorney, Leslie Sobers applied for reasonable bail, stating that he was not a flight-risk.
Sobers challenged the charge instituted against his client, stating that it was improperly brought since the accident occurred at the gas station and not on the road.
The Prosecution, represented by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Deneashwar Maindranauth, did not object to bail.
The Magistrate granted bail and ordered Phil to lodge his passport and report to the McKenzie Police Station every Monday until the completion of the matter. The case will be called again on October 22 for statements.
