Concerned residents of D’Andrade Street, Newtown, are hoping for a solution to an ongoing sanitation problem, which has resulted in the back up of sewerage and clogged drains in the area.
The situation, the residents claim, is as a result of construction works taking place on a building which is located at Lot 204 E½ D’Andrade Street. They claim that debris from the site is being dumped into the alleyway and drains surrounding the area.
When Kaieteur News visited the area, one resident who owns a business in the community, explained that pieces of material from the construction site have blocked the drains and the passageway.
He said “there was a pipe leading from the building to facilitate the flow of sewage to the back of the yard. There is no septic tank, and the place is under construction so the sewage is out in the open. This is not healthy.”
According to the resident, the issue has been ongoing for several weeks.
“There have been numerous complaints to the authorities. Yesterday, someone from the Public Health Department at City Hall came and removed the sewerage pipe but there is a lot of building codes being violated with this construction,” the businessman remarked.
According to him, there is a regulation that requires that a specific distance is maintained between the building, fences and neighbouring structures.
The resident claimed that there must be at least 10 inches between the building and the fence; and 20 inches or more between neighbouring buildings.
This is not being adhered to, according to him.
“The property is already a two-storey structure and the proposed construction is a three-storey edifice. This is the sort of thing that is not permitted in a residential district. The violation of boundaries can be dangerous in case of fires and so
forth.”
The man noted that several notices were also sent to officials at the Central Housing and Planning Authority, and the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC), but the matter had never received adequate attention.
“Letters were sent to the authorities in hope that an intervention would take place. We don’t mind the building, but we just wish that they do it in the correct manner and do not try to infringe on other people’s rights and properties,” the businessman lamented.
Yesterday, another notice was issued to City Hall seeking intervention for the enforcement of legislation relative to upkeeping the building codes and standards of residents of Newtown.
