– Co-worker on the run
A 27-year-old gold miner succumbed in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit around 15:00 hrs yesterday. This was after he was allegedly set on fire by a co-worker in the mining camp at Barakat Backdam, Cuyuni River on Monday.
Dead is Kester Anderson of Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Coast Demerara.
Anderson, who worked as a miner for the past two years, had sustained first degree burns to his face, head, hands and abdomen.
He was first taken to the Bartica Hospital and was later airdashed to the GPHC where he succumbed.
According to information received, Anderson and a co-worker were involved in a heated argument on Monday during which the man poured gasoline on him and set him on fire.
This newspaper was told that the man accused of burning Anderson is on the run.
At the GPHC yesterday, Anderson’s mother, Quenella Griffith said that she was at home when a relative informed her of what had transpired in the camp.
“The person said that he and some man had an argument and the man throw gasoline on him and then light him on fire… that is all I know… I don’t even know who burnt him,” the mother said.
According to Griffith, the last time she spoke to her son was two weeks ago, but he did not tell her whether he had any problems with anyone.
“I want justice for my son’s death. The police not telling me anything, I don’t even know who killed my son,” Griffith stressed.
Anderson leaves to mourn his parents and siblings.
