Stall holders of the East Ruimveldt market are pleading with the relevant authorities to address major health concerns at the facility. The operators are especially worried about an offensive odour that has been permeating the surroundings for the past few months.
According to them, apart from the heavily bushed area, the issue of garbage dumping at the entrance of the bazaar has been a major issue for a number of years.
One woman said, “That in no ordinary smell. No matter if dem just clean duh place the smell in going nowhere. Dem better check to see if nah a dead man deh bout.”
Pauline, who has been operating a grocery shop at the market for more than a decade, said that the stench has lingered for several months. The woman, whose stall is located at the entrance of the market, said that she is most affected by the “awful smell” especially when the breeze blows.
Apart from that, she explained that the public dumping at the market entrance has become the order of the day and the fleas have been increasingly pestering, “especially when rain falls they are all over the items and just invading the shop.”
Cleopatra Norton said the operators are conducting business in an unhealthy environment. She too complained about the offensive smell and suggested that the dumpsite to the entrance of the market be condemned since it is now a “community dump.” “Just walking through that area is unhealthy, especially for little children,” the woman told the publication.
Several operators agreed with their colleagues’ sentiments and urged that authorities improve their working conditions. “They come to collect stall rent and if you miss, you have arrears to pay and this is the poor condition,” an operator chided.
