Christianburg/Wismar and Waramadong have met three times before, twice in the finals and once in a semi-final with the former prevailing on all three occasions, but most pundits you talk to believe today’s clash for the title between the two teams will produce something special for the fans.
The two teams are scheduled to meet in the final of the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Competition at the National Stadium and judging from the buildup and releases emanating from the respective camps it seem certain that fans who will be able to watch the game free of cost will be in for a special treat.
Defending champions Christianburg/Wismar throughout their defence this year have looked in ominous form, while they also displayed admirable resilience in their semi-final clash against a fit and well organized Bush Lot Secondary unit, having to come from behind to equalize, before prevailing on penalty kicks, perhaps the only scare they’ve had for the tournament.
Waramadong on the other hand, were made to fight in at least two of their encounters during the campaign with the semi-final game against BV Secondary being their most testing, but like Christianburg/Wismar displayed similar toughness to pull through.
The game has been billed as ‘Extension or Redemption’ meaning will the defending champions extend their dominance over Waramadong and at the same time strengthen their stranglehold on the tournament or will Waramadong redeem themselves for the earlier losses suffered at the hands of the Lindeners.
What is certain is that both teams have expressed little fear for each other and have assured that past results will have no bearing on today’s encounter.
Christianburg/Wismar will once again look to their prolific front pair of Shane Luckie and Donovan Francis to lead their quest for victory.
Additional support could come from Ezra Ashby and Jashawn Moore, while Keyshawn Dey and Dequan Hercules are all pivotal in the team’s chemistry.
Waramadong who are being led by goalkeeper Gerald Isaacs will be looking to the experienced Myles Albert to lead their charge along with support expected from Deon Rodrigues and Uriah King.
Head Coach Louie Thomas had stated earlier in the week, that past results will not influence their approach to the game, he added that they will be looking for early goals and play positive football despite their dismal record against Christianburg/Wismar.
“We have to score early goals it gives you an advantage and hopefully by doing that we could then apply some pressure to the opposition,” Thomas told this newspaper.
He said they intend to be aggressive and play positive football at both ends of the field since he believed that this strategy is what is required to beat Christianburg/Wismar.
Meanwhile, BV will face Bush Lot in the third place playoff and this clash also has the hallmark of being a scorcher.
Both teams were unfortunate not to be contesting the final after losing in similar fashion to their more established opponents.
BV did show some fortitude when they came from behind to force a penalty shootout against Waramadong, while Bush Lot revealed moments of lapses that caused them the game against Christianburg/Wismar.
However, both teams management did concede that they made mistakes and have worked assiduously to correct them during the one week period allotted before today’s finale.
For Bush Lot, Captain Marlon Nicholson, Adrian Price, Royan Schultz, Jevon McKenzie and Eric Callender will be called upon to lead them to victory, while BV’s search for a win will rest on the shoulders of Obrandy Fields, Phillip Liverpool and Okema Hoppie.
Kick off time is 16:00 hrs for the third place and 18:00 hrs for the final.
