The People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R)’s recently concluded 18th Biennial Congress ended in chaos and resulted in a major division within the Party. However, the Party Leader, David Granger, who was re-elected, told Kaieteur News that despite the divisions within the party, he remains focused on the “One Nation” dream.
Granger had proposed the ‘One Nation’ approach as a solution to Guyana’s “crisis.”
He said that this could be the main mean of combining the talents of a wider constituency and of creating the conditions for social cooperation and economic progress.
The politician noted that the three-fold purpose of such a project would be to reach a consensus on the goals of national development, to establish a sustainable institutional architecture and to create effective policy instruments for the achievement of the common objectives.
According to the leader, “Our resilient and resourceful people and communities are eager to play their part in rebuilding our country as One Nation.”
Granger told those who gathered at the opening ceremony of the Congress, “Come with me; let us fight the PPP (People’s Progressive Party) not one another. Let us keep the pressure up to push the PPP out of office, elect a government of national unity and give the Guyanese people the good life that they deserve.
In a subsequent interview with Kaieteur News, Granger said that attainment of a one Nation reality is more than a dream of his. He said that it is a mission of the PNCR in close collaboration with the sister coalition—A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
He said that he is convinced that the solidarity of the party is very strong, “strong enough to achieve this mission”.
Granger said this as he dismissed charges that the Congress was unsuccessful. The Leader told Kaieteur News that he has found it to be quite the opposite.
Asked if he has intentions to bring back veteran party soldiers to complete the mission, Granger said that the Party has mechanisms to do so. He added that he will always welcome long-serving members to join the mission.
However, Granger said that he does not necessarily plan to reach out or invite them back. He however said, “I am not in the business of excluding anyone.”
Pointed to the allegations of the “flawed” elections process and asked if he is willing to resign, Granger said no.
He said that the majority of Party members are happy with the way things are going and the fact that “we have been able to attract non-traditional supporters shows that we are indeed doing something right. We will make Guyana one nation.”
