Three Guyanese who have displayed exemplary humanitarian services to local communities, in their professional and private capacities, were bestowed the “Paul Harris Fellow Award” by the Rotary Club of Georgetown on Wednesday last.
The distinguished awardees were Clifford Reis, Cecile Validum and Dr. Yesu Persaud. The presentation was held at the club’s monthly meeting at the Georgetown Club.
Ronald Burch-Smith, President of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, who chaired the proceedings, said that the awardees have “exemplified the values of Rotary, both locally and worldwide.”
Similar sentiments were expressed by the District Assistant Governor, Marcel Gaskin who said although the individuals are “not Rotarians” they have embodied the “principles” of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary.
Some of these principles he said, include “high ethical standards in their business and professional life, the application of service in their professional and private lives and their advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace.”
Cecile Validum, a registered nurse and midwife of the Georgetown Public Hospital, was recognised for her hours of voluntary service to the United States Humanitarian Assistance Programme and unrelenting support in the Rotary Club’s medical outreach programmes.
She said that being a nurse encompasses the values of the Rotary Club, and extended gratitude for the prestigious award.
Chairman of Banks DIH, Clifford Reis, received the accolade for his service within the District Grand Lodge and the Lions Club. In a period exceeding 10 years, Reis has raised over $40 million for charitable activities, and supported entities such as The Red Cross Society, St. Ann’s Orphanage, St. George’s Cathedral and the Linden Centre for Physically Challenged Individuals. He has been instrumental in the Carifesta Clean- up Campaign and the Banks DIH Sports Ambassador Programme.
Reis said that Banks DIH looks forward to supporting the Rotary Club’s voluntary programmes, since the collaboration was successful in the past. He felt “honoured” in receiving the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Dr. Yesu Persaud received the award for his active role in the development of youngsters and people in general, and his lifetime of charity within Guyana, helping places such as Cheshire Home and The Palms.
According to Burch-Smith, Persaud’s life has exemplified the educational and humanitarian objectives of the Rotary Foundation.
“We thank you profoundly for the demonstrating in your life, a commitment to helping persons in Guyana and around the world,” he said.
With the establishment of IPED and Demerara Bank, coupled with his lifetime achievements, Persaud was described as the ideal candidate for the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
“We who are better off, it is our duty and responsibility to help those who cannot help themselves to become better persons, better citizens, and maybe, maybe we could see a turnaround in Guyana,” Persaud said.
