Chris Gayle stroked an unbeaten 59 to lead the Jamaica Tallawahs to a seven-wicket victory over Antigua Hawksbills when the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) continued yesterday at Sabina Park.
Chasing 87 (D/L method), Gayle blasted two fours and four sixes off 36 balls to carry his team to 91-3 in 14 overs. Gayle and Chadwick Walton set their team on course with an opening stand of 44 before Walton was LBW to Ben Laughlin for 14.
The Tallawahs then lost Jermaine Blackwood (11) and Andre Russell (01) before victory was achieved; Adam Voges was not out on three. Laughlin claimed 2-28 and Rakeem Cornwall 1-17.
Earlier, Jerome Taylor and Nikita Miller shared seven wickets between them to restrict the Hawksbills for 89-9 after the game was eventually reduced to 17 overs due to rain. Taylor snared 4-18 from three overs while Miller captured 3-17 off four.
Ben Dunk scored 23 at the top of the order, but the middle order failed miserably, reducing the Hawksbills to 48-6 in 12 overs. Carlos Brathwaite slammed two fours and one six to top score with 24 off 16 balls while Schaya Thomas scored 12 towards the end, but their efforts were not enough for Gayle and company. Taylor collected the player of the match award.
Meanwhile, Barbados Tridents recorded another win, defeating St. Lucia Zouks by 3 wickets with 2 balls to spare. Scores: St Lucia Zouks 167/7 (20 ov), Sohail Tanvir 50*, Johnson Charles 50, Liam Sebastien 33; Barbados Tridents 168/7 (19.4ov), Jason Holder 48, Kieron Pollard 37*.
