In Athletics news from the Commonwealth Games currently being contested in Scotland; Guyanese sprinter Adam Harris placed second in his heat of the men’s 100m in a time of 10.45secs to advance to the semifinals. He trailed favourite Nickel Asmeade of Jamaica in that race. Jeremy Bascom placed 5th in his heat with a time of 10.58. Adam was an automatic qualifying place for today’s semi-finals where he will hope to bring Guyana medal glory.
Meanwhile, in shooting, Lennox Braithwaite and Mahendra Persaud placed 11th and 17th in the Queens’s Prize individuals. They are set for more competition over the next two days.
Alexander Arjoon won his match against G. Suwaris of Sri Lanka in 3 sets to 2 in Squash action.
In cycling, the men DNF in the 20km scratch race.
Today’s schedule for Guyanese athletes at the Games:
Boxing – Eon Bancroft fights the Sri Lankan V. Pathirage Don at 1:40 PM in the men’s welterweight division. Dennis Thomas is up at 2:15 PM against the fighter from Northern Ireland, Connor Coyle.
Swimming – Onika George swims her pet event, the 50m backstroke at 11:19 AM.
Athletics – Winston George and Stephan James compete in the men’s 400m at 11:25 AM. Adam Harris runs the men’s semifinals of the 100m at 7:42 PM.
Squash: Men’s Consolation plate finals are tomorrow at Noon.
