Port Kaituma, a hinterland community that sits along the Kaituma River, serves as the gateway
to Guyana’s mineral rich, North West District. Its development occurred as a result of Manganese that was discovered in a nearby area, Matthew’s Ridge.
There are approximately 6,000 people including a large percentage of Brazilian natives who participate in the area’s main activity; gold mining.
Last November, Macorp made a positive investment in the community and its mining sector, expanding its growing support and efficient customer services to miners across Guyana by opening a new branch in Port Kaituma.
Macorp is the first dealer of heavy duty machinery to open a branch in a mining area, and, according to Asif Sahid, Parts Manager, “Feedback from our customers has been exceptionally well. They now have easier and quicker access to Genuine Spare Parts”.
He added, “The Branch in Port Kaituma is also helping customers with better access to technical information which improves their operations’ efficiency. Customers have responded so well, that each month we keep increasing inventory of spares there. Our customers are extremely happy with us because we have in fact eased them of the logistics burden of getting spares on time and at reasonable prices.”
The beauty of the small community is raw and wondrous, but the dire need for infrastructure is evident and as such, Macorp has developed a relationship with the community and has since given back.
Donations include a sign that welcomes passengers and a shed at the Port Kaituma Airstrip. They also contributed to repairs to the fence around the airstrip.
Four mud terrain tyres were also donated to the Police Department in Port Kaituma that will allow them to effectively patrol hard to reach areas of the Sub Region.
“We are grateful for the tyres we have received from Macorp. They will allow us to get to other parts of the regions that the normal tyres wouldn’t take us,” stated Assistant Superintendent Winter.
Macorp’s support didn’t stop there. The Company also assisted when the Port Kaituma Primary School hosted its annual prize-giving and awards ceremony for some 300 students who did exceedingly well at their 2014 National Grade Six and End of Term Examinations.
Receving trophies, compliments of Macorp, were Richard Lackna, Ayashia Waddle, Raul Mendonca, Charlene Caesar, Roberto George, Lehecia Gill, Reni Somerset, Keziah Albert and Aliyah Rasheed.
They were awarded for their performances at the NGSA. The trophies were presented by Macorp’s Port Kaituma Branch Administrator, Kareb Price.
Headteacher of the school, Sharon Murray, expressed gratitude to Macorp for its support to the community at large and urged that it continues to avail its corporate support.
Macorp already has plans to give continuous support to the community, Sahid stated. “We are in Port Kaituma to stay; we believe the community has a lot of potential and it is our hope to help grow the community.
“We are pleased with the warm welcome we have received since we started. We want the community to see us as a partner. As we always say ‘Let’s Build Guyana Together,’” he added.
