Guyanese boxers got into action yesterday afternoon; bantamweight, Imran Khan matched gloves with Gicharu Benson Njangiru of Kenya. Njangiru had triumphed over Dexter Jordon at last Commonwealth Games and Khan suffered a similar fate losing to the Kenyan fighter.
Middleweight pugilist, Dennis Thomas, will tackle Jonathon Keama of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the preliminaries while bantamweight, Eon Bancroft, drew a bye to the next round which gets underway Monday August 28. He will tackle the winner of PNG/SRI showdown, while woman middleweight pugilist, Theresha London will match gloves with Lauren Price of Wales on Tuesday August 29.
Meanwhile Squash player, Nicolette Fernandes had earlier defeated Zambian, N. Muchaile in 3 straight sets (11-4, 11-3, 11-3) and played world number two ranked Englishwoman, Laura Massaro, yesterday. Fernandes lost to Massaro 3sets to 1. Her compatriot, Alexander Arjoon, lost in straight sets to Makin of Wales.
