… work to commence in two weeks
Seven local contractors on Thursday signed contracts with the Local Government Ministry to commence de-silting of main city canals and cleaning Le Repentir Cemetery. According to Ministry officials, over $34M is expected to be spent on the clearing of the main canals and almost $6M on the clearing of the cemetery, while over US$112,000 will be spent on the provision of specific laboratory equipment to be used at the Haags Bosch, Lusignan and other landfill sites.
During the signing ceremony, subject Minister Norman Whittaker explained that several communities will benefit from the clearing exercise. He highlighted that prior to the awarding of contracts, measures also had to be put in place which speak to the setting up of a technical committee of members from several agencies such as City Hall’s Engineer Department, the Works Ministry and others, to devise a plan to deal with the project.
It was that committee, he said, that came up with the work scope, and after visiting the sites to be addressed, also came up with estimated cost for the areas. Whittaker noted also, that after intense discussions and advice, the work to be done was tendered and the Ministry went as far as making recommendations.
Canals to be cleaned, Whittaker noted, are those on Princes, Sussex, Church, Irving, Lamaha and Young Streets. This involves weeding, de-silting of the canals and carting away of material to the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill. It also includes the cleaning of culverts, under bridges and tunnels that are within the path of the canals. The works are expected to begin in two weeks.
Additionally, the Georgetown Solid Waste Management Programme sought the provision of portables for measuring water and air quality. The Minister said that laboratory equipment will be used at Haags Bosch and other landfills to perform on site environmental monitoring of water and air quality in keeping with the standards stipulated in the environmental permit issued by the Environmental Protection Agency and any other environmental parameter that may become necessary.
The portable equipment type will perform quick analysis of the environmental parameters. The equipment includes a meteorological station for monitoring weather conditions, rainfall, humidity, wind and temperature. A radiation monitoring system/detector, dust monitor unit and heavy metal analyzer will also be procured, among other equipment, by the contractor Netcom Computer City.
