A Joel Dick double sealed a memorable 3-2 win for Guyana’s ‘Junior Jaguars’ over a game Antigua and Barbuda on day two of the Caribbean Football Union Under-17 Group 3 Qualifying competition at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, yesterday.
Coming off a draw with Barbados in their opening game on Thursday last, the Guyanese fought hard to secure full points in a tough match-up against the Benna Youths from Antigua and Barbuda.
Known as the ‘Benna Youths’, the lads from Antigua kept coming back every time the ‘Junior Jaguars’ went ahead. Joel Dick playing for the first time at this level like most of his teammates put his country ahead within the first ten minutes of play.
The ‘Benna Youths’ drew level but Dick put Guyana ahead yet again for a 2-1 lead by the end of the first half. Guyana enjoyed the advantage up until around the 70th minute when Antigua and Barbuda again drew level.
Just when it seemed like the game was going to end as a draw, the most experienced player on the Guyana team at this level, Keno Washington pulled one out of the bag to hand his team victory and full points, just like he did against Barbados to ensure the game ended 1-1 on Thursday last. Also playing his part was goalkeeper Quazim Yusuf on debut.
Barbados, playing against the host nation, Dominican Republic did not leave anything to chance as they won 2-0 to go top of the group with a better goal difference than the Guyanese, both on 4 points each.
Dominican Republic and Antigua and Barbuda are on one point each. The final round of matches in this group will be played tomorrow at the same venue and the Guyanese will be going all out for a win that can see them winning the group depending on the outcome of the other game.
The Junior Jaguars will face the home team in the feature game from 16:30hrs with Antigua and Barbuda and Barbados meeting from 14:00hrs.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
