A cracking right-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box by Obrandy Fields was the solitary difference between eventual champions Beterverwagting Secondary School (BV) and Institute of Professional Education (IPE) in the Region 4 Zone final on Saturday, at the St. Cuthbert Mission Community Centre ground.
Playing for a national quarter-final berth in the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Competition, Fields, who plays for BV Secondary, collected a pass from centre-field, before rifling a fierce shot past the IPE goalkeeper, an end result that evidently settled a battle that was contested on a heavily waterlogged outfield that made passing an absolute nightmare for the two teams.
Despite the inclement weather, the residents of the community that is dominated by those of Amerindian decent braved the wet conditions to show support for the visiting teams, who tried desperately to provide an entertaining game for them.
In the opening period, IPE looked more purposeful in their buildups and should have scored on at least two occasions, but poor finishing combined with an abundance of individual plays negated those promising opportunities.
As the rains continued to pour down, creating chances became more and more difficult as the players struggled to exhibit their true abilities and the fans barely got glimpses of the abundance of talent that resided in the two teams and they went to lemon time deadlocked at nil-all.
On the resumption, both teams tried courageously to make the game entertaining and each came close to scoring, but each time the goalkeepers were alert to the dangers and pulled off brilliant saves.
However, Fields, who was having an excellent game latched on to a pass from the centre, faked one defender, before beating the goalkeeper to his left to send the fans into frenzied celebrations after 84 minutes of play.
BV had to withstand some threatening raids after then, but held on tenaciously until the final whistle sounded six minutes after they had scored to take the title, $100,000, the winning trophy, medals and a place in the national playoffs.
