Twenty-three-year-old Dmitri Reis, perished when a derelict building came crashing down on him early this morning. At the time, the man, said to be of unsound mind, was sleeping under the building located in Paul Lane, Beterverwagting.
The dead man’s brother, Rayon Calder, turned up when news reached the family. He said that his brother had opted to be away from the family in his moments. However, he would visit the home regularly.
He routinely slept under the house in Paul Lane although he had other options.
The news hit his mother hard. Other relatives were also grief-stricken. Many of the buildings have been left by people who died intestate or by people who have migrated. Their deterioration was hastened by the fact that they have been unoccupied.
The sound of the fallen house did jolt some people out of their slumber but nobody paid too much attention until sunrise. It was then that somebody saw Reis’ body under a large beam. It had been crushed.
One resident said that the man’s death is reflective of the focus on mentally ill people. In many cases relatives would allow the mentally to roam since they cannot imprison the relative or insist that the individual seek medical attention.
