Champions Leonora Secondary made it three regional titles in a row after easing to
a comfortable 4-0 triumph over St. Johns Secondary 4-0 in the final of the Region 3 Zone when the Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Championship continued yesterday, at the Den Amstel ground.
Gavin Graham started things off on a positive note for the defending champions when he rifled in a fierce right footed shot that slid through the hands of the goalkeeper, before nestling in the lower left hand corner of the net after just two minutes of play.
That lead doubled sixteen minutes later through Keon Farley, who netted with a flat right footer that landed into the lower right hand corner, after sprinting on to a neatly relayed pass, before hitting it past the keeper.
Things got even worse when it became 3-0 after thirty-three minutes when Graham completed his brace, lobbing a right footed effort over the advancing keeper down the middle of the goal, just to the right side of the penalty area.
The win was effectively formalised in the 67th minute when Farley grabbed his second goal of the match with a simple tap in down the middle of the goal from inside the centre of the area, after the keeper had bizarrely fumbled a simple right sided cross into his path.
With the win, Leonora Secondary received the championship trophy, first place medals and $100,000 towards the building of any school project. They also earned the opportunity to represent the zone in the national event which is slated to commence shortly. In the Region 6 Zone at the Skeldon Community ground, Guysuco Training Centre defeated Tutorial Secondary by a 4-3 margin to seal their berth in the final. Over at the Beterverwagting ground, East Ruimveldt crushed North Ruimveldt Multilateral by a 3-0 score line in their Georgetown zone fixture.
Shawn Kirton opened the scoring for the Mandela Avenue unit as he netted in the 27th minute. Troy Carrington would then double their lead through a 37th minute effort. Romell Legall would then complete the quarterfinal win as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 69th minute.
Continuing in the Georgetown Zone at the Camp Ayanganna ground, Charlestown Secondary defeated Government Technical Institute (GTI) in their quarterfinal matchup by a 1-0 score line.
