Dear Sir,
The City Council ought to be speaking louder against the way the Minister of Local Government, Mr. Norman Whittaker, is going about spending the $500M that was voted by parliament to do works in the city. The city belongs to the people who have elected their representatives to manage the interests. ,
First, according to the law, the Minster is a facilitator, not the Mayor or even a Councillor. He has responsibility to facilitate processes and provisions to assist local democratic organs. He has no business in the day to day affairs of municipalities.
Imagine, they are dumping silt in the cemetery blocking entrances. This has created a very serious inconvenience to those who are seeking to rest their loved ones in that facility.
Therefore, the Mayor and his Councillors ought to take a stronger stand against the high level of disrespect shown to the council by the Minister.
The money belongs to the people; not the government. The people’s representatives must have a say in how the money is being spent.
