Alliance For Change Region Two Councillor, Naith Ram, who was slapped with additional charges stemming from the
rice farmers’ protest, was on Monday placed on $30,000 bail by Magistrate Sunil Scarce. Ram was initially placed on $10,000 bail.
He appeared on Monday, at the Charity Magistrate’s Court to answer to the new charges of indecent exposure and assault to a police officer. He was released on self bail on the offence of assaulting a police officer.
Police said on July 4, last, at Land Of Plenty, Essequibo Coast, Ram’s clothing was torn off after attempts were made by the police to arrest him. The police added that protestors were pulling Ram away from the police which lead to his clothes being torn off.
The protest which was led by Ram, a Councillor, commenced at Cotton Field before the group converged at Land of Plenty where the protestors proceeded to block the main public road with tyres, trucks, cars and a lamp post. The protest continued way into Saturday morning.
Tage Persaud Sewcharran, another protestor, was additionally charged with assaulting a peace officer. He was released on his own recognizance on Monday. The duo was represented by Heimraj Rajkumar.
