Played in front of a raucous capacity crowd of over 1,500 home fans, defending Region one Digicel Secondary Schools Football champions, Santa Rosa Secondary, squeezed past North West Secondary 3-2 in a penalty shot-out yesterday after the game was deadlocked 3-all after regulation time at the Kamaka Recreation ground in Moruca.
The ram-packed Kamaka Recreation ground, in the business centre of the Amerindian Village of Santa Rosa, which is about 30 minutes by aircraft for Ogle on the East Coast of Demerara, produced a fantastic atmosphere in sweltering heat as they excitedly urged the Santa Rosa team on.
Despite being in their own backyard, the defending Champions were never allowed to really dominate and at the end of regulation time it took a come-from-behind effort to leave the goal margin identical and the riveting contest had to be settled on penalty kicks.
It was the North West Students, who travelled by boat from Mabaruma, who made full use of an opportunity to score when Orin Charles collected a ‘throw-in’ from the left side and lobbed the ball over the head of a leaping Goalkeeper, whose valiant attempt to parry the ball over the bar resulted in it being ‘chucked’ onto the cross bar before falling back into the Goal.
The visitors had little time to celebrate their 15th minute lead as Brandon Phillips equalized for Santa Rosa by finding the back of the nets, four minutes later.
North West attacked Santa Rosa’s goal with Steven Gamall giving his team a 2-1 advantage in the 63rd minute before Odike Headley made it 3-1 in the 79th minute to silence the Santa Rosa’s supporters.
However, Santa Rosa upped their attacking play and scored twice inside the last 10 minutes to the delight of the large turnout, which included a large number of female fans.
Alanzo Abraham beat the keeper in the 81st minute and Keith Da Silva scored in the 86th minute to level the score and send the pulsating contest into a penalty shot out, in which Santa Rosa prevailed.
