A 54-year-old Cornelia Ida man had to seek treatment at the West Demerara Regional Hospital for a gunshot wound he received on Wednesday night when he was attacked by a lone gunman.
A police press release stated that Mohamed Khan was standing with a friend on the roadway at Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara at around 21:30 hours when he was confronted by a man armed with a handgun and who demanded his valuables.
According to the police, Khan put up a resistance and was shot to his left side.
The man reportedly told investigators that he had just come from the Masjid and was standing on the road when he saw the man riding towards him. He said that he heard two explosions but did not know at the time what had caused them. He later realized that it was his attacker who had discharged two rounds in his efforts to scare Khan and a male friend who was with him.
He said that the man shot him in his side after he told him that he did not have any valuables, having just left the place of worship.
Khan was rushed to the hospital by his friend to treat his bleeding wound, while the perpetrator escaped on a motor cycle.
Investigations are in progress.
