Two city youngsters were yesterday charged for mugging an elderly man earlier this month.
Roheem Benn, 20, of William Street, Kitty and Hakim Morgan, 18, of Albouystown, Georgetown appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, and remanded to prison.
The charge alleged that on July 3, in Albouystown while armed with a scissors, they robbed Julian Whyte of his Mountain Climber bicycle which cost $18,000 as well as $2,000 cash.
They both pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Joel Ricknauth explained that the elderly man was attacked on his way home.
He said that as Whyte rode his bicycle the two defendants approached him. One of them reportedly placed a “half-scissors” to the man’s neck and took away his bicycle whilst the other relieved him of the cash in his pocket.
Ricknauth explained that they then rode away with the man’s bicycle.
The Prosecution related that as they rode away, the virtual complainant saw a police rank and informed him of the incident. The rank, he said, sent out a transmission via a police network and another set of ranks saw the men with the bicycle and arrested them.
They were later placed on an identification parade and were positively identified by the elderly victim. Ricknauth noted that the weapon was found in the pocket of one of the accused and they were subsequently charged.
The Prosecution objected to Morgan being granted bail since he has pending matters before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Magistrate Latchman then remanded the duo. The case is set to be called again on July 10.
