A tactical change in the second half combined with clinical finishing by New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS) Captain Jamaul Butts made the difference in their narrow 3-2 triumph over hosts Orealla as play in the Region 6 Zone of the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Competition continued at the Orealla Community Centre ground.
Butts whose skill, speed and tactical superiority was a class above most of the players on both sides, hit in a hat-trick in the 50th, 67th and 73rd minute as NAMS had to claw their way back on two occasions, before eliminating a stubborn Orealla Secondary on Monday to make it to the next round of the competition.
Orealla had taken the lead in the 26th minute through Cameron Edwards, who showed sharp awareness to run on to a ball that was lobbed high over the defence from centre field to lift his effort over the advancing goalkeeper’s head. The scoreline remained unchanged at the break.
In the final period, Butts, who was playing in the midfield was switched upfront as the lone striker and immediately you could see his impact as he mesmerized the Orealla backline with his speed and dribbling ability and had it not been for poor finishing from his supporting cast they might have taken the lead early in the half.
However, NAMS could not be denied and earned a penalty from a handled ball infringement committed by a defender from Orealla and up strode their savior, who stroked it into the far right hand corner with the goalkeeper going the wrong way. That was five minutes after the resumption.
Orealla, however, responded two minutes later through Wilton Rodrigues, who fired in from close range after an aerial ball was punched back into his path and he prodded in at the near post.
Once again Butts was asked to respond and he did this time outsprinting two defenders following a clearance from in his team’s half, before beating the advancing keeper to his left to tie the contest.
Six minutes later, Butts, who had received a yellow card for showing dissent in connection with a call made by the referee, added another, this time showing his awareness to sprint on to a ball that was played forward and he lashed it into the back of the nets to sink the hearts of the partisan home support.
The two teams battled hard after that for the win, but NAMS was able to hang on to book a place in the next stage of the competition. Digicel’s CEO Gregory Dean, Marketing Executive Jacqueline James, Events and Sponsorship Manager Gavin Hope and Tournament Co-ordinator Lavern Fraser, all visited the area to witness the game, while the Draw for the Regional Playoffs was conducted at the same time.
James was asked to do the honour of pulling the regional winners that will battle each other for a place in the final. The draw showed Region 8 winner will play against the winner of Region 7; Region 2 winner will battle the survivor of Region 9, while Region 5 winner will face the winner of Region1.
The three to come out of those engagements will join the five other automatic qualifiers in the national quarter-finals for places in the semi-finals and final.
The national quarter-finals will see Region 4 square off against Georgetown; Region 6 take on defending champions Region 10; Region 3 will engage the winner of the Region 7 and 8 clash and in the last quarter-final, Region 5 will go up against the winner of the Region 2 versus 9 matchup.
