The Guyana Amazon Warriors, without six of the players who are on International duty, got the better of a Guyana Select team in their first practice game at Providence Saturday as the ‘Warriors’ prepared for their opening game in the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) against Antigua Hawksbills in Grenada on July 11.
Also without Guyana Captain Leon Johnson and New Zealander Martin Guptill, the ‘Warriors’ led by West Indies left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, reached 136-7 off their allotted 20 overs in sweltering heat and on a slow straw coloured track before limiting the Devendra Bishoo led unit to 131-6 when their overs expired.
According to Head Coach Roger Harper, Johnson and Guptill are suffering from ‘little niggles and are being protected’ resulting in the pair missing the game. They however were at the venue where they participated in light training.
West Indies under-19 left-Hander Shemron Hetmyer led the way with an attacking 37 from 31 balls aided by three fours and a six but only Trinidadian Navin Stuart who hammered a cameo 22-ball 32 with a four and three sixes, reached 20.
Trevon Griffith and Robin Bacchus scored 18 each as pacer Keon Joseph and left-arm spinner Anthony Adams picked up two wickets apiece.
When the Guyana select team responded, Andrew Lyght Junior hit a typically pugnacious 37 with three fours, while wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble slammed two fours and a six in 32. He was supported by Shemroy Barrington (17) and Ricardo Adams (15). Another practice match was fixed for yesterday. (Sean Devers)
