Coach Nedd confident
By Zaheer Mohamed
Coach of the Guyana U-17 cricket team, former Guyana off spinner Garvin Nedd, feels his team has what it takes to win the Regional 50- over tournament which commences in Tobago on Tuesday.
He was speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday morning at Windjammer Hotel just before the team departed for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
Nedd said the team is a balanced one and has a fair amount of knowledge at this stage. “Most of the players are capable all-rounders some of whom had previous experience at this level so they know what to expect”, he added.
Guyana’s only victory in last year’s competition came against Jamaica, but Nedd feels as long as they play as a unit they can bring much more success to the Guyanese public. “I think we have a fair chance of doing well, the players know themselves and what they are capable of. They just have to stick to the game plan, execute well, work on their strengths and try to eliminate their weakness”, he said.
The Guyanese will open their campaign against the Leeward Islands on Tuesday at Bon Accord and the coach pointed out that they want to begin with a win. “The team spirit is good, but it’s always good to start on a positive note, that will boost the team’s confidence a lot”, Nedd stated.
Keemo Paul, who is one of the six U-19 players in the Guyana Amazon Warriors training camp and Sherfene Rutherford, are two players that have the ability to win matches singlehandedly at this level and Nedd feels a lot will depend on the duo. “These are two talented players; we want to use them as much as possible so we can gain valuable fast bowling bonus points. However, Guyana is known to produce quality spinners and we have a fair amount of variation in left arm spinner Akieni Adams and off spinner Richie Looknauth”, explained Nedd.
Nedd, who picked up 29 wickets with his best being 6-23 against the Leeward Islands in fourteen first class games for his native Guyana, said that he is satisfied with the team’s batting. “Our batsmen have the ability to chase huge totals but they will have to adapt quickly to the surfaces in Tobago”, he said. The tournament concludes on July 15.
The team reads; The team reads: Travis Persaud (capt.), Ronaldo Ali Mohamed (vice capt.), Adrian Sukwah, Raymond Perez, Ronaldo Renee, Sherfane Rutherford, Ramnarine Chatura, Timothy Mc Almont, Brandon Prashad, Keemo Paul, Kelvin Shewprasad, Akenie Adams, Richie Looknauth and Retesh Umroa. The coach is Garvin Nedd and the manager is Nazeer Mohamed.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
