Dear Editor,
I was recently summoned to court as a material witness acting in a professional capacity and the experience has left a frankly bitter taste in my mouth; I am still horrified at the appalling lack of civility of the presiding magistrate in the case.
While on the witness stand, I was – as a professional not there on trial myself – made to alternately feel, by her erratic and uncouth behavior, as if I were at the mercy of the court or a recalcitrant child being upbraided by an angry and impatient school teacher.
What the entire court was exposed to was, in notably her first case for the day, a one-woman theatre of hubris, high-handedness, uncivil behavior and what can be more accurately described as barking than actual speech. What was clear from the reactions of the other more seasoned visitors to the court not only was this behavior out of order, that it was tolerated, if reluctantly.
I understand the need for deportment, for adherence to procedure, to follow certain customs of court, but the magistrate’s behavior went far beyond any necessary steps to maintain such. This was not my first court appearance, but one that has decidedly left me both saddened and disappointed that at the highest level of law and order our country’s representation can be so unrefined.
Dr. O. Scott
