Dear Editor,
This is a eureka moment for Guyana! That the AFC has thrown down the gauntlet and is inviting the larger party in the opposition, APNU to consider a no confidence vote against the PPP is superb and indeed cause for hope.
I would like to think that this is an opportunity to demonstrate political maturity among the opposition parties and show that they can do big and meaningful things that puts the interest of Guyana first.
The results of the 2011 general elections presented the opposition with a unique opportunity and the time is long past when this action should have been taken against the corrupt and kleptocratic PPP regime masquerading as a legitimate government of all the people.
Any honest assessment of the PPP’s twenty-two unbroken years in office must take into account how the PPP over the last decade or more has reduced Guyana to a pimper’s paradise where the national patrimony is being frittered away to the “family and friends network” or to nationals of two of the most corrupt and unscrupulous countries in terms of business practices, China and India.
Now that the opposition has dangled the sword of Damocles over the PPP’s head, there can be no turning back because to do so would embolden the PPP to continue with impunity their wretched excesses in depriving the nation of equal opportunity and justice under the law.
There is nothing that precludes the AFC and APNU from putting aside their differences and form a pre-election coalition that must guarantee the following: 1) prosecution of all government officials who have stolen or cause to be stolen or conspired with those who have stolen and or defrauded the national treasury since 2000. 2) Draft a more just and inclusive constitution that promises equality for all from pauper to president. 3) Stand up an independent judiciary that is not beholden to any single politician and make Guyana a nation of laws where the rule of law prevails against presidents with despotic tendencies. 4) Promote transparency and accountability to eradicate corruption, torture and narco-trafficking.
I think if the opposition is sincere in their efforts and lay out the facts to the nation I think they will be rewarded by the people to right the wrongs of this immoral PPP government.
It is said that sunlight is the best disinfectant as it relates to politics and lord knows Guyana is in need of disinfectant in the worst way.
A vote of no confidence against the PPP that will lead to fresh elections and a change of government will go a long way in removing the stain that the PPP has wrought on this nation.
