Host St. Cuthbert quest to advance further into this year’s Digicel Schools Football Competition came to a screeching halt on Saturday when the visiting Soesdyke Secondary registered an emphatic 6-1 triumph, at the Community Centre ground in St. Cuthbert Mission.
Playing in front of a vocal and partisan crowd, the visitors were led to victory through a brace from Aaron Chance (11th and 57th ) and solitary strikes off the boots of Rayan Khan (41st ), Sheldon Roberts (61st ), Quasi Easton (70th ) and Clitus Johnson (86th ), while an own goal off Johnson ( 75th ) accounted for St. Cuthbert’s lone reply.
St. Cuthbert started the game in positive mode, applying early pressure on the Soesdyke backline, but the visitors held firm to keep the game even.
However, having weathered the storm, Soesdyke produced some promising attacks of their own and silenced the crowd when Chance collected a pass delivered from just outside the penalty area and without hesitation lashed the ball past the goalkeeper.
The result stunned both players and supporters, while Soesdyke, buoyed by their lead continued their bombardment and should have netted another goal had it not been for excellent goalkeeping by the St. Cuthbert custodian.
Four minutes before the half time whistle sounded, Soesdyke increased their advantage when Khan, who was terrorizing the defence with his mesmerizing skills, entered the scoresheet after rifling home following a scrimmage in the goal area.
In the second period, both teams squandered chances to score, but once again Soesdyke made St. Cuthbert pay for their lapses and it would be Chance, who stretched Soesdyke’s lead further when he blasted in a fierce right-footed shot past a surprised St. Cuthbert’s goalkeeper for a 3-0 advantage.
Roberts and Easton then made it more difficult for St. Cuthbert to mount a comeback after hitting in goals of their own, before a back pass from Johnson intended for the goalkeeper to clear was missed completely and the ball trickled over the line.
However, Soesdyke was not done yet and Johnson returned to make amends when they won a penalty four minutes from regulation time and he buried it low into the right hand corner of the goal.
The scoreline stayed that way until the final whistle sounded to hand Soesdyke a convincing win and a place in the next round.
