Shortly after 10:00 hours yesterday morning at the junction of Main and New Market Streets, Georgetown the driver of a cement-filled canter slammed into the side of a blue motorcar.
The impact sent the smaller vehicle to land in a nearby drain. The canter toppled on its right side spilling the sacks of cement it was transporting.
Following the collision, a two and a half month-old child who was in the car with its parents, who are registered nurses here in Guyana, was taken to the Woodlands Hospital and admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where up to press time it remained in a critical condition.
The parents, Princy and Matthew Thomas, were stable but were grief stricken since their child was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Dyall Ramkissoon, the driver of canter, GKK 8333, stated that he was with a porter on his way to deliver a quantity of sacks of cement when the accident occurred.
Ramkissoon said that the driver of Mitsubishi Lancer, PJJ 7560, was moving along New Market Street when it failed to stop at the junction and “made a reckless right turn into Main Street.”
He said that in an effort to take the turn ahead of his Canter which was coming from Main Street, the car crossed the first half of the intersection but had instead made contact with the Canter.
Ramkissoon said that his vehicle slammed the car into a drain. The Canter driver insisted that his vehicle had the ‘right-of-way’ on Main Street.
Eye witnesses at the scene who also spoke to Kaieteur News confirmed his version of events.
Whilst the driver and porter sustained injuries, they did not immediately seek medical attention.
Kaieteur News understands that the family was rushed to the Woodlands Hospital by an acquaintance.
