Bail was yesterday set to the tune of $100,000 for two Baramita, Barima-Waini (Region One) labourers who were charged for burgling a business owner’s house and making off with over $600,000 in gold, raw silver and other items.
Dexter Griffith, 43, and Junior Melville, 19, were jointly indicted for break and enter and larceny before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The charge against them alleged that between June 16 and June 28, last, at Central Baramita, they broke and entered into Noran Ramroop’s business and stole a quantity of items totaling $666,000.
The items listed in the charge included 10 pounds of raw silver, a gold chain and ring, hydraulic oil, 40 men’s jerseys and a cellular phone.
To the allegation, they pleaded not guilty and asked the Magistrate to consider bail.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharat Mangru, explained that on June 16, last, the businessman secured his place but had returned on June 28 around 12:00 hours to discover the items missing.
Ramroop reported the matter and the subsequent day, the police caught the two men with a quantity of tee-shirts and other items.
Mangru explained that they were selling the items at a cheaper cost and the entrepreneur identified the clothes as his.
Melville and Griffith were arrested and further investigations led to the two being charged for the offence.
The Prosecution offered no objections to bail but asked that conditions be applied.
Forde, who was unrepresented by legal counsel, denied involvement in the burglary and stated that he was “given two jerseys.” He told the court that he has a drug-related case pending at the Wales Magistrates’ Court.
He said that he is from Vive La Force, West Bank Demerara but works as a labourer at Baramita.
Meanwhile, Melville told the Chief Magistrate that Ramroop was his employer and he had owed him $15,000. She advised him to make such reports to the Ministry of Labour.
The sludge worker stated that he had no previous brushes with the law.
Bail was granted and the case is set to be called on August 4 at the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates’ Court.
