– Cuban doctor in custody
A Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara mother, early yesterday lost her only child who was struck down just a
stone’s throw away from her home by a speeding motor car. The vehicle was reportedly driven by a Cuban doctor.
The accident occurred around 07:40 hrs on the Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara (EBD) Public Road.
Dead is eight-year-old Gabriel Davidson, a Craig Primary School pupil.
The child was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre before being taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she later succumbed.
According to reports, the eight-year-old died from a fractured neck, severe abdominal and head injuries.
Up to press time the doctor, who is attached to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, was in custody at the Madewini Police Outpost.
According to information, the child was waiting on a mini bus to travel to school when she was struck by the vehicle and flung a fair distance away from the point of impact.
At the hospital yesterday, the child’s mother, Yonola Davidson was inconsolable.
“Ow meh baby, you take my only baby away from me, why, why…she was all I had,” the mother shouted.
The woman said that the doctor at GPHC informed family members that her daughter died from multiple internal injuries.
The visually distraught mother said that the child would usually leave home with some other children to go to school but she left alone yesterday.
“When she walked out from the street, she doesn’t have to cross the road to get a bus. She does stand right in the corner and the bus does stop right there for her,” the mother reflected.
She added that when her daughter was struck down, the driver immediately rushed her to the Diamond hospital to seek medical attention.
“A boy who has a shop right on the road run and tell me and I get ready and rush out to go to the hospital,” the woman said.
She added that when she went out on the road, she found her daughter’s ribbon and one of her socks a reasonable distance apart from each other on the public road.
“When I reach at the hospital my daughter was unconscious and they take her to GPHC in an ambulance,” the mother said.
Family members also accused GPHC attendants of stealing the child’s earrings.
“The only thing I had to remind me of my daughter is gone now. I wanted the earring because my daughter was wearing that when she died,” the mother cried.
The child’s father, Lennox Davidson, was not informed of his daughter’s death as of late last night.
“Where he does work in the interior ain’t got signal and he wouldn’t call until next week,” a family member told Kaieteur News.
Investigations are ongoing.
