The Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security yesterday received a donation of $14.1 million from the estate of the late Mrs. Muriel Wight.
The cheques were presented by the Administrator of her estate, Mr. Edwin Verasammy to the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Mrs. Lorene Baird.
The monies received by the Ministry are intended to improve services offered at the Palms Geriatric Home, abused women and children, and a small monetary donation will be given to two identified non-governmental organizations.
Mrs. Wight, who lived in Bel Air, Georgetown, died on July 26, 2010 at the age of 102, and left a substantial portion of her estate to support services for battered women, including providing funding for three charitable institutions that assist women and children and persons suffering with cancer.
Wight nee Fraser had dedicated most of her life to the Guides Movement in Guyana. She became a member of the Sisterhood in New Amsterdam in 1922, beginning as a Brownie in the Second Brownie Group Company and served as a Life Vice-President, up to the time of her passing. In 2010, the Guyana Girl Guides Association launched the Muriel Wight Scholarship Fund for Girls and Young Women.
