Ever since the Digicel School Football championships commenced some four years ago, the Charity Secondary School (CSS) had prevailed over the New Opportunity Corp (NOC) all three times that they have faced off. The two teams clashed again at the New Opportunity Corps Ground, Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast, Sunday afternoon last and the former school once again carted off the honours 4-0 to retain its unbeaten record. Sampson Culpepper scored in the 23rd and 80th minutes with support from Joel Bowen (2) and Clinton D’Oliveira (65).
The Charity team started aggressively with some crisp passes that ensured that the ball remained in the opposition’s berth for most of the initial exchanges.
In the meantime, Joel Bowen, manning the left flank, was fed a dolly of a pass which he collected and deftly struck past the opposition’s custodian to send his team to the lead. The battle for supremacy continued and Bowen was a virtual thorn in the side of the opposition; he collected another offering and once again wended his way down the left flank but spoiled his chances after over chucking the ball.
Undaunted by that failed effort, the Charity front men led by Bowen and Sampson Culpepper pressed on but staunch defensive tactics by the NOC lads ensured that the situation remained unchanged. It was around that time that the NOC launched a spirited attack and almost equalized the situation but the eventual strike slid down the right side of Charity’s berth.
The Charity team then widened their lead after Sampson Culpepper was fouled in the box and duly converted the penalty in the upper left of the NOC goal. Despite several other advances characterized by near misses neither team was able to score and CSS went in at the half with a 2-0 advantage.
A good size crowd of mostly CSS supporters continued to egg their team on at the start of the second session. Buoyed by the support the Charity front men engaged in a clever bit of ball distribution and D’Oliveira, lurking near the goal mouth, was tasked with the responsibility of scoring after he was gifted a precise pass in front of the NOC goal mouth. However, the wily striker lost his nerve and instead of a flat strike, he scooped the ball over the crossbar. Less than 5 minutes later he starred again and sent in a vicious right foot shot only to hear the dreaded offside whistle.
D’Oliveira proved that he was made of sterner stuff when he collected a pass less than five minutes later and sprinted down the left wing; this time his pinpoint strike passed the defenders and the goalie to keep his team in front, 3-0.
The NOC players offered sporadic resistance but for the most part they were outclassed. David Belgrave was outstanding among the lot and he took on the CSS defence on several occasions but failed to find the requisite support. Despite conceding 4 goals, the NOC custodian, Joel Bess also saved commendably and had it not been for his theatrics between the uprights the margin of defeat would have definitely been larger. The action resumed yesterday afternoon and will continue today at venues countrywide.
Meanwhile, the action shifted to two venues in Georgetown yesterday afternoon and over at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, North Ruimveldt had a field day against Sophia Training Centre and sent them packing 6-1. Jeremy Garrette netted a hat trick for the winners in the 18th, 31st and 42nd minutes with able support from Tyrese Rowley (11), Carl Griffith (48) and Shamar McPherson (70); Serine Daniels narrowed the score for the losers in the 57th minute.
Over at the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports ground, Carifesta Avenue, Queen’s College paid the price for their tardy performance and were defeated 2-1 by Caramel Secondary School. Marlon Allen (14) and Caleb Allen (20) were on target for the winners while Nathan Patterson netted a penalty for the losers. It really should have been a 2-2 stalemate at the end of regulation time but for a vital penalty miss, ironically by Patterson who netted the first.
The lanky striker struck with enough power but little direction that sent the ball over the crossbars. Even more painful was the fact that even before the ball touched the ground, the referee’s whistle signaled the end of the game.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
