Police have detained the 28-year-old labourer whose knife attack has left his 17-year-old cousin Matthew Jack in a critical condition.
The suspect was arrested on Saturday night at his parents’ B Field Sophia home, but police have not found the knife that was used to inflict the injuries. He is likely to be charged this week.
Meanwhile, the victim, Matthew jack, also called Matthew France, remains in a critical condition in the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Jack, of Lot 372 ‘A’ Field Sophia, was stabbed in the chest, face and shoulder at around 22.00 hrs on Friday during a dispute with the suspect, who was accused of stealing items belonging to Jack’s sister.
The sister, Onika Mentore, said that at around 22:00 hrs last Friday, her cousin became annoyed when she confronted him about some items that were missing from her bedroom.
“Earlier in the day, me and my brother (Matthew) left to go by another sister and we left our cousin in the house. I paid him to clean the house and I left my bedroom key with him.”
She added that when she returned she asked her cousin for her bedroom keys but he claimed that she never gave it to him. “He was telling me that I didn’t give it to him and I know I put it in his hands.”
“I continued looking and he left and say he going and buy a joint. I had to eventually break the lock and when I went into my room, everything on my vanity had disappeared except for the stuff I had already used,” Mentore said.
She added that she immediately went outside and informed her brother and another sister what had transpired.
“I tell them that I going to the station and my sister say that I should wait until my cousin come back and ask him about it.”
Kaieteur News was further informed that when Mentore confronted her cousin; he became enraged and picked up a knife. “He pointed the knife in my face and say that I could do whatever I want to do and I pushed him away.”
Mentore said that her cousin subsequently went to her brother and after starting an argument with the teen, stabbed him four times before escaping.
According to Mentore, France is her only brother and she along with her three sisters would do whatever it takes to ensure that the suspect faces justice.
