A porter who thought that he was working too hard decided to steal some cash from his boss. He was caught and has been charged for the crime.
The man, Mahendra Mohan, called “Mickey”, 17, of Guava Bush, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Shurdel Isaacs-Marcus on Friday in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on the charge of simple larceny. He was not required to plead.
The man is accused of stealing $100,000 on June 18, last, from his boss’ lorry and hid the money in his crotch. The money was the property of businessman, Satrohan Sohan, of Lot 4B Williamsburg, Corentyne.
Prosecuting Sergeant Godfrey Playter told the court that Sohan owns a number of lorries and distributes beverages and other items in the area.
On the day in question, he along with the accused and two other workmen left with his lorry GLL 5439 to do some distribution along the coast. They returned home around 16:00 hrs. Sohan parked the vehicle and proceeded to count his money from the day’s sales which amounted to $1,300,000.
He then parcelled the money into 13 separate packages of $100,000 each. The parcels were numbered 1-13 and placed under the driver’s seat in the cabin. Sohan proceeded to lock the truck and went into his home. He subsequently looked out of one of his windows and saw the accused entering his vehicle.
Becoming suspicious the man returned to the vehicle and proceeded to check the money and realized that one parcel was missing.
The accused who was nearby was asked about the missing money and denied taking any. His pockets were checked, but the missing cash was not found. The police were contacted and the accused was arrested and taken to the Rose Hall Town Outpost where a check was made on his person and the missing money was found concealed in his crotch.
He admitted to stealing the money, but told investigators that he found the cash on the steps of the vehicle while he was cleaning it. He decided to keep the cash because he thought that someone had dropped it.
He will have to return to court on July 15, at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
