A City rank accused of stealing a quantity of cash from the Constabulary Department of City Hall was yesterday morning
found dead in the bathroom of his home. His demise is suspected to be another suicide.
Forty-six-year-old Compton Joseph was found slumped over in his bathroom around 05:30 hours by his wife, Roxanne Beresford. The Lance Corporal who was attached to the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) ended up in hot water last week when he could not account for money for which he was responsible.
Kaieteur News understands that during last week, Joseph had attempted to take his life by drinking a poisonous substance, but was unsuccessful since persons had taken him to the hospital on time and he was treated.
City Hall’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Royston King told the newspaper that the Council is yet to receive a report on the alleged missing money, but it is understood that Joseph was responsible for bail money being kept in the City Constabulary’s Department.
He said that Joseph was asked by his superior to get the accounts books in order so that it could be looked at but the gentleman was unable to do.
King said it is understood further that Joseph had failed to turn up for work the next day and could not be located. He said that police were also called in and a search commenced for the city rank. The Council subsequently learnt that Joseph had ingested a harmful substance and was hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
King said it was alleged however that Joseph had escaped from the hospital and went into hiding, until word reached the Council that he had allegedly taken his life.
When Kaieteur News visited Joseph’s wife at their Lot 457 10 Field Section D Turkeyen home yesterday she said that she had not seen her husband until yesterday morning. She said that her husband came home around 03:15 hours since neighbours said that he was calling out for her.
She said it was not until later in the morning that her older daughter woke her up to say that Joseph was at the back of their house moaning. Beresford explained that she went to her husband’s assistance and found him lying on the ground crying out for chest pains.
She said the man had messed himself so she along with a neighbour went to his aid. She said that the man requested to use the washroom and he was taken. The woman said she had gone to her mother-in-law’s home located a few houses away and reported what was taking place. She said she returned home and went to check on her husband, and found him slumped over on the toilet bowl.
Beresford said her husband appeared dead so she made the necessary calls and his body was later removed. The woman said she is unaware that her husband had killed himself. When asked, she said that her husband had not talked about any problem he was experiencing.
Joseph’s sister, Felicia Joseph, said that she had not seen her brother in a while due to her hours of work. She said, however, that his wife had come to the family’s home early yesterday morning to relate that something was wrong with her brother.
She said the family was later informed that Joseph had passed away. The man leaves to mourn his wife and three children.
