Mackenzie High made its intention clear that defending champions Christianburg /
Wismar will not have things their way after registering an impressive 3-0 win over host Wisburg Secondary as play in the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Competition continued yesterday, at the Wisburg Secondary School ground.
The visiting Mackenzie High took the lead through Qualan Andries, who netted in the 9th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Captain Kelon Primo then stretched their advantage 15 minutes later when he fired in a fierce shot past the goalkeeper.
Playing in soggy conditions, Mackenzie High kept a high tempo, orchestrating many dangerous moves inside the opposition half and could have increased their lead, but solid goalkeeping kept the scoreline the same at the end of the opening period.
After the resumption, Wisburg created a few opportunities to score, but Mackenzie High custodian Hosiah Nicholson was equal to the task, producing some brilliant saves to keep their advantage intact.
First, he parried a powerful shot into touch for a corner and then he had to make a smart save shortly after.
Wisburg continued their relentless assault on goal and were a bit unfortunate not to pull once back after Nicholson was left stranded out of his goal after attempting to clear a corner with the ball eluding him and landing into the path of a Wisburg striker, whose goal bound shot was cleared off the line by a defender.
Mackenzie High made a substitution, inserting Anthony Allicock and his impact was immediately felt as he headed in a corner to give them a 3-0 lead after 55 minutes of play.
Despite both teams showing impresive attacking flair, the conditions underfoot made it difficult for proper ball control and the scoreline remained the same until the final whistle sounded.
The next game in the Region 10 Zone will be between Kwakwani and Marcia Craig Education Institute on June 22, starting at 15:30 hrs.
