The Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension did not have even standing room as hundreds turned out to pay their last respects to veteran educator, poet, trade unionist, New Amsterdamer and mother, Mrs. Rose Agnes Therese
Dos Ramos.
Monsignor Terrence Montrose, Fr. Mohan Joseph, SJ and Fr. Justin Prabhu, SJ concelebrated the funeral service last Saturday.
Prior to the service, the tributes flowed for Mrs. Dos Ramos. Immediate Past President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Mr. Colin Bynoe, hailed the late educator for her hard work in the union over the many years. She had held several posts and was very active in the area of sports and other union activities. Many of her former colleagues in education, teachers, school heads and deputies and retired educators, even many of those whom she taught over the years were there at the funeral.
Her husband, Peter; her children, Samantha, Peter, Jr., Ray, and Dr. Karen recited poems and did the eulogy.
Msgr Montrose remembered Rose as a woman who was never afraid to live out her faith. She was a courageous person, he added, never hesitant or fearful to let her voice be heard, in politics especially. He recalled two years ago when she and Uncle Peter stood along the East Bank Berbice Road at Heathburn and held up placards protesting the poor conditions of the thoroughfare. The date was May 5, 2012.
They were anticipating the presence of President Donald Ramotar for Arrival Day celebrations at Plantation Highbury. Rose did get President Ramotar’s attention because he pulled over and stopped and looked at their placards.
She was a pillar in the community of the Ascension. She was in charge of the Lector Ministry, President and Secretary of the Liturgical Committee and even served on the Pastoral Council. She was instrumental in planning and coordinating Tea Parties and Parish Fairs as well as many other parish events.
A Memorial Mass will be said in her memory on Sunday at Ascension at 08:30 hrs. All are invited. May her soul rest in Peace.
