– taxi driver carts “couple” off to CID HQ
An East Coast Demerara labourer was yesterday arraigned before a senior city Magistrate for allegedly abducting his ex-girlfriend in an attempt to force her to a popular city hotel.
The attempt, the court heard, was only cut short because the taxi driver carted the couple off to the Headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and made a report of the matter.
The accused Mark Bhikhari, 28, of Front West, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face the abduction charge.
The charge stated that Bhikhari, by force, on June 6, last in Georgetown, compelled his ex-girlfriend Vashti Sukhdeo to go with him into motor car HC1851 from Water Street, Kingston to a popular South Road Hotel.
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty and submitted a bail application through his lawyer, George Thomas.
Representing the Prosecution, Corporal Bharat Mangru stated that the two had shared a relationship for the past three years. On the day in question, the victim was on her way to work while Bhikhari was a passenger in a car.
Mangru stated that the accused held onto her and forced her into the taxi insisting that she go with him to the hotel. The Prosecution said that the woman made an attempt to escape but her efforts were met with force from Bhikhari.
The driver, who noticed the commotion, drove the car into the Headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Eve Leary, and made a formal report of the incident, the Prosecutor said.
Bhikhari was subsequently charged for the offence.
The Defence Attorney, in making his bail application, stated that his client was willing to subject himself to any condition deemed necessary by the court. He said that his client, if granted bail, would make no contact with the woman and will report to the police.
His application was met with no objections from the Prosecution, thus bail was allowed in the sum of $350,000. The Chief Magistrate ordered the Prosecution to file statements and the case will be called again on July 4.
