Dear Editor,
Recently, there have been a increase in robberies and attempted robberies and one case of attempt rape of a thirteen-year-old girl who knew one of the persons. These incidents happened on East Bank Essequibo and West Coast Demerara.
The police were successful in capturing some of the bandits from different robberies and also detaining some suspected of committing or attempting to commit crimes.
About two weeks ago, GUYANA WATER INC. officials were reading the water meters in Zeelugt. As usual there were a few who weren’t appreciative of their presence and gave various reasons. I don’t know if these people’s behaviour caused the officials to be scared but one businessman told me that the ladies didn’t enter his yard, they just asked his name and wrote something down on a paper and moved on.
He’s wondering what’s the purpose of the meter in his yard. On Monday, I observed two young men in Zeelugt walking, going to each house and asking for the resident’s most recent water bill. They sometimes asked if the resident was getting water, if anywhere is leaking and then write down the name on the bill.
They told the residents to keep the bill handy because GWI is conducting a nationwide disconnection campaign and that the disconnection crew will be visiting the area shortly. These men left without verifying if there were indeed any leaks or low water pressure.
Some residents were not home so their names were given to the GWI people who hinted that they will be disconnected if a bill is not produced. I then asked if GWI officials had the lot number and the resident’s name. I also wanted to know how could they disconnect if the persons don’t owe them.
The young man said that he needed to see a receipt and I asked if GWI did not have a computerized system that would have the info. Why not print it out and walk with it? Why disconnect because a receipt cannot be produce if the resident is not at home?
He then told me that contractors were doing the disconnection and they don’t have a list. Again I asked why one is not being printed out and those that are to be disconnected highlighted. The youngman simply walked away.
Why pay people to walk around asking for bills when the time comes for disconnection, you will have to go back through the same process again? Why inconvenience people by disconnecting their water because they can’t see the person’s bill when they would have the info on their computer at the office? I started to wonder what sort of geniuses we have at GWI because a few weeks ago I was at the West Bank Office. If you going to pay your bill and you forgot to walk with your old bill, you will have to join the line to see one of the customer care staff. He or she will bring up the name on the computer and write the account number. You will then go and join the cashier’s line to pay. Sometimes this might take over one hour but lo, and behold! when I give the cashier the account number, she called the name to which the account belongs and which she refuse to acknowledge earlier because you don’t have the account number.
Editor, I started off by mentioning the robberies because looking around the office you will see the staff dressed in all manner of clothing and I wonder if they have a dress code because clearly, some of them are not dressed for office.
Some would have clothes with GWI logo and some don’t. Then they have their badge/work ID card clip at different regions of their body. Their appearances might not be important because they are working in an office but the two young men that worked in Zeelugt on Monday and Tuesday really need a make over because their appearance was worst than those in the office.
One was wearing a haversack and both of them had hidden IDs. With all the robberies occurring, one would have expected them to wear clothes with logos or have a GWI vehicle with the LOGO visible so that the staff would not be treated with animosity. Finally, does GWI have a dress code?
