Dear Editor,
Permit me space in your column to express my opinion on a matter of great concern to me and some of my countrymen. My topic is “who or what is gained from town week activities”?
I do support the Linden Town Week celebration, the visit of the overseas visitors, the going and coming of citizens from all over Guyana, the decoration of our town by the various businesses and most of all the fun and frolic that we are so much accustom to.
I made some observations and recognized every year it’s the same thing. For example, the Linden Town Hall from its external appearance is very untidy; grass is growing on the pavement outside the fence of the building, the drains or gutters on Arvida Road or Republic Avenue are filled with grass, wild eddoes, food boxes and plastic bottles. Greenheart Street, Mora Street, Potaro Street, Berbice Road and none of the other drains are different in appearance.
The newly constructed river wall is filled with plastic and ware bottles, food boxes and all sort of garbage. Lindeners are a good people to be celebrating 40 years of township in an untidy situation. My question once again is who or what organization gain from Town Week activities. My answer is the Town administration and the business sector. I suggest that those two groups make a collaborated effort before, during and after the celebration of Town Week to bring about a change to the physical appearance and the social standing of our Town.
Can the organizers of the Town’s celebration respond? Would they respond? As a citizen of Linden Town I demand an answer. Please don’t judge me wrong. I love those celebrations more than many Lindeners but at its conclusion, Lindeners must witness some new development in one way or another, the organisers need to make a public declaration of profit or loss because it’s a business venture now!
