President Donald Ramotar, during a press conference yesterday, attributed his seemingly evident weight loss to “eating sensibly” and staying away from too much of sweets. He said that he has also been working out.
“I always tried to live a healthy life and I believe that if you want to enjoy life you should be healthy and fit.”
He said that from a young age he was trying to keep fit but as he got older and preoccupied with more things that come with age, the end result was weight gain.
The President said that he decided to cut back on the amount of food, “eating smaller quantities more regularly and cutting out fatty foods as far as possible.”
He said that he has been eating healthy— a lot of greens and not overdoing it with protein. At my age I don’t want to do that.”
In addition to sensible eating, Ramotar outlined adequate exercise. He said that he didn’t have a personal trainer. “I believe I am my own best personal trainer.” He said that he got a lot of help when he would frequent the gym.
“There are some very good people in the gym and they all assist me with good advice in that regard.”
Ramotar outlined that in addition to keeping fit and healthy, his knee injury necessitated his actions to lose the weight. “I had an old injury on the right knee and it was acting up a little bit more than usual so I thought that also losing the weight will help that a great deal.”
The President’s weight loss comes at an ample time and serves as a leading example of the need for Guyana to watch its weight.
Research by international organizations such as WHO (World Health Organization) and PAHO (Pan American Health Organization) has shown the inextricable link between disease and obesity, with obesity predisposing one to diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular problems.
In the Guyana context, obesity has increased significantly among the younger generation and adults.
