…caretaker arrested and placed on $100,000 bail
Five boys from the Berbice Anjuman Orphanage have been removed from the facility and placed into protective custody.
The measure is to facilitate an investigation into sexual assault and other allegations, the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security said in a statement, yesterday.
The Ministry and the Guyana Police Force, are conducting an investigation into reports of sexual abuse and misconduct at the New Amsterdam orphanage.
The Ministry received a report of a child running away from the Berbice Anjuman Orphanage in New Amsterdam to his parents because he said that he was sexually abused at the institution.
This report was received on May 28, last, and the Child Care and Protection Agency responded immediately, the Ministry stated yesterday.
Both the owner and caretaker of the Berbice Anjuman Orphanage have denied reports of child molestation and sodomy at the Philadelphia Street, New Amsterdam institution.
A number of students were reported to have fled the institution after they were unable to tolerate the molestation any longer.
The Orphanage houses both male and female students—about 45 in number. There are reports of both sexes being molested.
