Guyana to participate in Futsal Club C/ship
Guyana Football Federation (GFF) General Council Member and Secretary of the East Bank Football Association, Franklin Wilson, recently attended the CONCACAF Five-A-Side Committee Meeting that took place in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
This is the second meeting that Wilson has attended and has reported that the development of Futsal within CONCACAF in a holistic way dominated the meeting which was chaired by Committee Chairman Mr. Eduardo Li. CONCACAF President Mr. Jeff Webb also attended the meeting.
Chairman Li reported that CONCACAF which has 41 associations and divided into three regions (the North Region, the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) and UNCAF (Union Centro Americana de Futbol) will be focusing and investing in the development of Futsal.
While Futsal is played on a regular basis in other parts of CONCACAF, the Caribbean has a lot of catching up to do, Wilson noted.
In this regard, CONCACAF is implementing an extensive programme to develop Futsal in the Confederation. This new strategy will bring more courses and competitions to the Member Associations. The programme started in March 2014 with the CONCACAF Elite Futsal Referees Course held in Guatemala and will continue with the First Edition of the CONCACAF Futsal Club Championship scheduled for August this year in Guatemala.
Wilson has reported that the Committee agreed that Guyana will be one of the countries invited to participate in this competition to be held in Guatemala City at the Domo Polideportivo, August 19 – 23, 2014.
Since it is a Club competition, the top club in Guyana would be the representative team. The GFF was duly briefed by Wilson on this development with Wilson disclosing that he is in the process of finalizing a proposal for submission to the GFF.
Eight teams will participate and will be placed into two groups of four each.
CONCACAF will also be doing a Pilot project in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago which would be reviewed and then done in five other National Associations.
