The Guyana Judo Association (GJA) held a successful Independence Judo tournament at the North Ruimveldt Multilateral School last Monday.
Belle West Judo Club, Kitty Jammat Judo Club, Albouystown Masjid Judo Club, Multilateral Judo Club and the House of Water Club were the five clubs which participated with over 40 athletes participating. The Judokas were divided into five divisions and there was also an open division.
Prior to Raoul Archer ascending to the position of Presidency in March 2013 there were only three clubs but within a year that number grew to eight, showing the rapid growth of Judo under Archer’s leadership.
Archer, though satisfied, said there is a lot more room for improvement generally and he thanked all those who participated and his executives who helped to make the tournament a success.
The GJA top-man praised sensei Charles Ambrose, Sports Physiologist Wayne Walcott, Guyana’s sole Judo Olympian Raul Lall, Permanent Secretary in the Agriculture Ministry George Jarvis, Khan Auto Sales, Sankar’s Auto Sales, Banks DIH, the parents and all those who were involved in making the tournament a success.
The Kitty Jammat Judo Club has produced two International Judokas in Hamza Eastman and Delroy Murphy under the Presidency of Archer, while Sensei of the Club Ion Weathers is presently training in Barbados for the CAC games scheduled for Mexico in November.
